CULTURE IS SOCIETY’S OS

✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧⋄⋆⋅⋆⋄✧

We’ve got a lot of thoughts on the topic of digital <> cultural currency, but what about digital (tech) and cultural debt? Straight from the FWB core team Slack #reading-list channel, “The Hacking of Culture and the Creation of Socio-Technical Debt” spoke to the opportunity that we see at FWB. In it, authors Kim Córdova and Bruce Schneier argue, “Culture, as articulated through human systems such as art and media, is a kind of social infrastructure. Put differently, culture is the operating system of society.”

Louder, please! Culture is society’s OS, but trad tech and social platforms, driven by hyper-personalized algorithms, are breaking the cultural operating system. Our extremely orchestrated feeds “fracture common cultural norms into self-reinforcing filter bubbles” rather than “binding people through shared narratives” and — you guessed it — culture.

This is when emerging tech enters the chat. Imagine what’s possible when we update our “societal OS” to match emerging technological rails?

On that note, we are updating FWB’s token ecosystem and migrating $FWB to Base L2. More on this below, along with an opportunity for 10 artists to attend FEST, thanks to Optimism.

$FWB IS MIGRATING TO BASE

$FWB is strategically migrating the $FWB token from Ethereum Mainnet to Base Layer 2, and introducing a new arcade token, $Benefits.

This evolution of our token ecosystem is a milestone for FWB. Born from a squad of culture makers interested in emerging technology, we have always been a community of trendsetting experimentalists. Much much more to come on the migration. In the meantime, mark your calendars with these migration milestones, and review the passed proposal for additional questions.

THE PALIMPSEST OF PERSONHOOD:

FWB x WORLDCOIN x PUSH IN TOKYO

We explored The Paradox of Personhood back in January within the specific context of Mexico City’s beloved contemporary art fair, Feria Material Vol. 10. We’re running it back for another edition of our partnership with Worldcoin, exploring the many iterations of personhood within emerging technology.

Next week, we revisit personhood in Japan alongside our friends at PUSH for 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓟𝓪𝓵𝓲𝓶𝓹𝓼𝓮𝓼𝓽 𝓸𝓯 𝓟𝓮𝓻𝓼𝓸𝓷𝓱𝓸𝓸𝓭, a two-day pop-up experiential gallery at The Plug on July 6 & 7.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

Calling all artists! We’re funding 10 artists with 3,000 OP each to experience FEST. Applications are open from Thursday, June 27 to Monday, July 8. Funds will be distributed by Friday, July 12. See you at FEST!

Artists and creators are at the heart of FWB. As culturalists in search of better tech, we flock together looking for ways to expand the squad. Our friends at Optimism feel the same (cc: We <3 The Art). Which is why we’ve teamed up with them to bring 10 deserving artists to FEST to display work, touch grass, and squad-up with fellow cultural technologists.

Application is open until Monday, July 8. Winners will receive funds by Friday, July 12.

LUKSO IS FOR CULTURE + FEST FITS TIX SNATCH

Social developments in the lifestyle arena are calling for a unified technological answer. LUKSO is the chain for social, culture and creators driven by three principles:

Identification: Enabling unique identities – Digital identities form the basis of all interaction among and between creators and users, digital and ‘phygital’ products, as they make all of them visible and addressable in the digital world.

Virtualization: Creating digital experiences – By conflating and transcending the boundaries between different realities, we can establish a seamless connection between all dimensions of users’ self-presentations, perceptions, and experiences.

Tokenization: Building Economic Communities  Lifestyle consumption has become a collective and reciprocal experience, where vibrant online communities of empowered consumers determine the choices that are being made by their peers.

LUKSO powers and secures systems of trusted cooperation in the modern creative economies. They’re giving away 2 pairs of FEST tickets (4 total) to the best FFEST GRWM on X or IG.

How to Enter:

1. Post your best FEST Get Ready With Me. Accepting: flatlies, ai generated images, memes, playlists, even starter packs +++

2. Crank Verite and pray.

Accepting submissions until 7/2, winners announced 7/3

MEMBER CORNER ↈ

From Member BorrowLucid:

Good Morning Summer 2024 - stories for summer, because we’re onchain and need something to tell each other around the fire. This Buildathon project is an experiment in supply & demand, and bypassing the NFT royalties challenge. By creating arbitrary scarcity, the game is then to drum up enough demand to increase resale values. Look out for zines in Idyllwild! Initial digital collectable sale price is 0.001 ETH on Base.

COUNCIL CORNER ↈ

Mint this NFT from NOUNS BREAKERS @ GLOBAL PIZZA PARTY LA with @FWBtweets, @Pizza_DAO, @superchiefnft, @cryptosapeins_, @nounsbreakers

Apply to BaseCamp 001

Since day one, Base has rallied a community of builders working to create a decentralized future onchain, together. We’ve seen the impact of collective action to reshape the internet, and now with the 1-year anniversary of Base mainnet coming up this August, we’re bringing the community together in person with BaseCamp, our inaugural gathering of builders and creators building the next generation of the internet onchain.

TYSM TO OUR FEST PARTNERS

Our 2024 cohort of presenting partners include Base, Eco, LUKSO, Stellar Development Foundation, Uniswap, and Worldcoin. Special thanks to Lens, Livepeer, PUSH, and Optimism for their collaboration. Incredible activations are coming to FEST.

Deep and many thanks to our FEST host, Idyllwild Arts Academy

Nestled amidst the breathtakingly beautiful village of Idyllwild, high in the San Jacinto mountains of Southern California, the Idyllwild Arts campus serves as a peaceful respite for artists seeking to explore the depths of their creativity and join a broader creative collective through the Academy (an international boarding arts high school) or the Summer Program (an immersive arts camp for all ages).

Idyllwild Arts respectfully acknowledges the Qawishpa Cahuillangnah (also known as Cahuilla Band of Indians) and all nine sovereign Bands of Cahuilla people who have stewarded this land throughout the generations and continue to steward this land for all future generations.
